About Vakameasina
Vakameasina (translating to 'treasures we carry together') is an education and development programme for seasonal horticultural workers, funded under the NZ Aid Programme. The contributing Pacific Island countries of Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Nauru and Papua New Guinea make up the participants in the programme. Seasonal workers come to New Zealand for up to 7 - 9 months at a time under the NZ Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme, which continues to develop with the growing horticulture industry across New Zealand.
The Vakameasina programme is focused on developing skills and knowledge while workers are in New Zealand in order to create sustainable development opportunities for the workers to improve their lives and that of their communities back home. Fruition Horticulture BOP delivers this programme across New Zealand which integrates life skills, English language, literacy and numeracy learning. Vakameasina educational courses are based on and customised to the needs of the participants. Courses range from basic life skills such as financial capabilities, health and human rights, through to small business development, leadership, building, small engines, potable water solutions, solar power, horticulture, NZ Road Code and more.
Vakameasina supports growth and learning in New Zealand and contributes toward healthy resilient communities throughout the Pacific.
